Integrating Citizen Science activities in an urban area of industrial heritage

The NKUA team is one of the main organisers of a two-day teacher training seminar entitled "Memories of industrial heritage meet Citizen Science in the Drapetsona abandoned fertiliser factory area" that is taking place on the 20th and 21st of May 2022.

The other organisers are Center of Environmental Education of Drapetsona, the Municipality of Keratsini-Drapetsona, the Regional Education authorities for Attica, and the District Education authorities for Pireus and Athens.

The seminar, which has both a theoretical and a practical part, aims to introduce the integration of citizen science into environmental education for sustainability, focusing on the urban area of the industrial heritage of Drapetsona (near the port of Pireus).

On the first day of the seminar, Maria Daskolia, will give a presentation on “Citizen Science and Environmental Education for Sustainability: promoting synergies in school for the benefit of science, the environment and education”, followed by a presentation by Dimitris Gkotzos entitled “The Citizen Observatories Natusfera, Pl@ntNet and OdourCollect of the European project Cos4Cloud. How to join in and use of them”.

The practical part of the seminar consists of a field trip to the former industrial site on the second day. All participants will join in a field study of the area to record plant species and biodiversity with Pl@ntNet and odour pollution with OdourCollect. The aim is to run a mini Bioblitz event since 85 teachers are expected to attend this seminar.
